Planet Billy Bob

The Planet Billy Bob Thornton Newsgroup FAQs
(Frequently Asked Questions)

  1. Who or what is Planet Billy Bob?

Planet Billy Bob is a planet in the Internet galaxy in which Billy Bob fans reside. There, fans can post commentary, share news, and catch up on all things Billy Bob.  It is a young planet, but it is growing.

  2. I want to join the Planet Billy Bob e-mail list.  How do I do it?

First, go to the Billy Bob page at Yahoo!Groups (the URL is  http://groups.yahoo.com/group/billybob) and click on the blue button toward the top that says Join This Group!  This will take you to a Yahoo!Groups page that will allow you to join.  It's quick, it's easy, and it's free.

Next, click on the link that says Sign up now to enjoy Yahoo!Groups to go to the sign-up page.  There, you will choose a Yahoo!Groups I.D. and password.  Fill in the required information (including your e-mail address) and click.

Yahoo!Groups will automatically send you a confirmation e-mail titled Welcome to Yahoo!  Please Activate Your Account.  That e-mail contains a link back to Yahoo!Groups; that link says Important! Click here to activate your new account.  Click on that link.

When you get the Yahoo!Groups sign-in screen that says: You're almost done. For your security, please enter your Yahoo! password into the form below and click the Verify button.  Your new Yahoo! I.D. will already be on the page.  All you need to do is key in the
password you selected when you initially signed up.  Then click the button that says Verify.

A new page will pop up to announce Your alternate email address has been verified.  There will also be a link that says Continue to Yahoo!  Click on that link, and you'll get the standard log-in page for existing Yahoo! users.  Key in your Yahoo I.D. and password and hit the Sign In button.

You will be brought right back to the
Billy Bob page at Yahoo!Groups, this time to join.  There, you will be asked to fill in a form indicating your mailing group preferences, including whether you want individual e-mails, no mail, daily digests, HTLM or text formats, etc.  Customize your preferences, fill in the security word as directed at the bottom (they put these in to stop spammers), then hit the Join button.

    You'll get a
Membership Confirmed page verifying your e-mail address, I.D. name, and preference.  There is also a link that says Go to billybob Home.  This link takes you to the billybob - Billy Bob Thornton's Official Mail Group home page, which sports a nice picture of Billy Bob and features all sorts of information and options available to you as a member of Planet Billy Bob.  Feel free to click around, look at the features, and explore!

You'll also receive a friendly greeting letter from Amélie and Sage welcoming you to Planet Billy Bob.

  3. I am subscribed to the Planet Billy Bob e-mail list, but I don't want 30 emails a day. What do I do?

If you didn't indicate when you originally signed up that you would rather have the digest version (in which several postings are consolidated into one e-mail), you can just go back to Yahoo!Groups, and log in as a member.  When you've logged in, you'll see links to all the Yahoo!Groups that you belong to listed on the left-hand side of the screen.  Click on the billybob link, which takes you back to the billybob home page.  In the upper right-hand corner of your screen, right across from Billy Bob's picture, is a link that says Edit My Membership. Click on that link to go to your individual preference page, where you can change your subscription as you see fit.

  4. Can I send Billy Bob email directly through the Planet Billy Bob list?

Billy Bob does not have an email address at this time.  Please see our Contact Info page for further information.

  5. I need to unsubscribe. How do I do this?

You can go back to Yahoo!Groups, and log in as a member. Click on that link to go to your individual preference page, where you can click on the Unsubscribe button.

  6. I just got the best picture (or sound file) of Billy Bob! Can I send it to the list?

Please do not send graphics, clickable links (as opposed to URL test that can be cut and pasted), or sound files to the list. Yahoo! automatically deletes them.  If you wish to send graphics or sound files, make an announcement to the list that you have these things to share and if anyone is interested, to e-mail you privately off-list.  You can forward it to all requesters on an individual basis.

There are two ways to share photos with your fellow Planeteers.  The first is to log in to the Billy Bob home page at Yahoo!Groups and click on the Photo link on the Home menu bar on the left side of your screen.  Follow instructions for uploading photos onto the newsgroup's photo gallery.

The second way is to join the bbtgallery, which is a Planet Billy Bob group just for loading up pictures.  You can sign up for bbtgallery the same way you signed up for Planet Billy Bob on Yahoo!Groups.

  7. Ruh-roh! My friend just sent me an e-mail warning me about a virus that you can get through e-mail! Should I send a warning to the list?

Have no fear, Planeteer!  Yahoo!Groups automatically removes all viruses from our e-mails before they are posted.  You can't catch or spread a virus through the newsgroup.  If you just want to post a general warning on the list about a virus, feel free.

  8. There is this person on the list that I can't stand. Can I flame them on the list so everyone can see what a jerk this person is?

No.  Interpersonal conflict stays off the list!  Flaming gets the flamers unsubscribed.  Planet Billy Bob is not talk radio.  If you disagree with someone's opinion, feel free to state your own keeping in mind that opinions, by their very nature, can't be right or wrong . . . they just are. And try to separate the person from the opinion. You may feel that a person's opinion is stupid, but please don't call the person stupid. We're sure that we're all mature enough to find a more diplomatic way to say things. We're going to disagree from time to time and that's fine, but there's no need to get personal. Jerks are pretty self-evident, and we usually contact them off the list to ask them to clean up their act or leave the list.

  9. I want to tell everyone on the list about something that doesn't have anything to do with Billy Bob, is that okay?

Yes, but please make a note in the header that the topic is OT. For example, in the subject line, write something like "OT - I got stung by a scorpion today!"  That way if someone is not interested in any news that doesn't include Billy Bob, they can delete the message.  Try to keep your OT posts to a minimum, but do feel free to share news that others might enjoy and can relate to.

However, we do try to avoid certain topics:  religion and politics.  Billy Bob doesn't talk much about them, and we don't, either, because we have so many diverse views and religious people on the list that our first priority is always our common interests.

  10. What does "OT" mean?

OT means "Off Topic" or not relating to Billy Bob Thornton.

  11. What does "OBBC" mean?

OBBC means "Obligatory Billy Bob comment." This is what you put into your OT posts to placate those Planet Billy Bobbers who are not interested in anything NOT Billy Bob related. For example, you might tell us about the joys of getting stuck in traffic than end your post with "OBBC: if I have to be stuck in traffic, why can't I be stuck with Billy Bob riding shotgun with me?"

  12. What does it mean when the others tell me to "quote what I'm responding to"?

If you reply to a post with, for example, "Me too" and nothing else, then no one knows what you're agreeing with. Please quote or paraphrase what you're responding to and who said it.  That's what's so great about the cut 'n' paste function!

  13. How much do I include in the "quote"? Should I change the header of the post?

Include enough so that everyone can tell what you're talking about, but don't quote the entire message if you're only replying to a small part of the message. In your subject header, make sure it reads "Re: Billy Bob's movie" (or whatever you're replying to). Some mailers automatically include "Re:" when you reply, but some don't. If you start a new topic or thread, change the subject header to reflect this. Please don't keep using the same old header long after the thread dies.

  14. I met this guy on the internet who said he was a good friend/co-worker/relative of Billy Bob's!  He asked me for my personal information so he could send me something  DIRECTLY from Billy Bob Thornton!  Should I trust him?

    NO!
You can never be sure of who anyone else is on the Internet, even on our friendly Planet.  Please use your cyber-smarts and protect yourself:

DO NOT give anyone any of your personal information unless you are SURE of who they are. DO NOT post personal information to the list. THIS IS FOR YOUR OWN PROTECTION.

If you receive any inappropriate contact, please be sure to log it and report it to the proper authorities.  And be sure to contact both Amélie and Sage to let them know immediately!

DO NOT send any money to people you do not know.

If you have mail or chat controls, set them.

Parents: be sure any available parental controls are appropriately set.

Finally, anyone claiming to be close to Billy Bob will either be known to Amélie and Sage or known to Billy Bob's staff.  Run that person by us, and we'll do what we can to verify the person's claim.  Our highest priority is to protect Billy Bob, his staff, his family, and his fans from Cyberstalkers, trolls, and creeps.  Always exercise caution on the Internet.

  15. Who are these List Mamas?

Amélie and Sage are the webmasters of Billy Bob's official site, Billybobapalooza.  Amélie is the List Mama for Planet Billy Bob.  We have a friendly relationship with Billy Bob and hope to strengthen his ties to his fans by making Planet Billy Bob the best newsgroup possible for all concerned.  Amélie, who is based in Los Angeles, has worked for 19 years in the motion picture industry and is more directly involved in Planet Billy Bob.  Sage, a Texan, is a web designer and webmaster who is the behind-the-scenes genius.  When you have a question, check in with Amélie first.  She'll try to get back to you as soon as possible.

We'd also like to take this opportunity to acknowledge our former List Mama, Lily, who founded both Planet Billy Bob and created the Billybobapalooza site.  She is retired from active involvement in the Billy Bob experience, but she remains a Planeteer, and we thank her every day for bringing us all together!

  16. So who came up with this astronomical metaphor?

Uh, that would be Sage.  Amélie gets lost trying to find the full moon in a cloudless night sky.
