Plot
Young horse-breaker John Grady Cole (played by Matt Damon) comes
of age the hard way after his recently widowed mother sells
the ranch he had hoped to inherit out from under him.
Yearning for open spaces and a cowboy's life, he leaves Texas with his best friend Lacey Rawlins (Henry
Thomas) to find a new life in
Mexico. There, he finds plenty of horses to tame and a forbidden, doomed love with a wealthy rancher's
daughter (played by Penelope Cruz) that eventually gets him
thrown in jail.
What Billy Bob Gets To Do
He gets to work with his favorite crew, including
cinematographer Barry Markowitz, as well as pays his respects to
the westerns of John Ford. The results, even in the
truncated form, are lyrical, melancholy, and beautiful.
Backstory
This bittersweet tale set in the post-WWII vanishing West earned a National Board of Review Citation for Ted Tally's adapted screenplay and a Golden Globe nomination for Marty Stuart's score. Based on the popular novel by Cormac McCarthy,
ALL THE PRETTY HORSES stars Matt Damon, Penelope Cruz, Henry Thomas, Lucas
Black (young Frank from SLING BLADE), Bruce
Dern, Miriam Colon, and Robert Patrick. It should be noted
that this version of the film is not Billy Bob's version, which
originally ran some three hours long, but was pared down
considerably at Miramax's insistence. Incidentally,
Penelope Cruz named one of her cats Billy Bob in honor of her
director.

Marty Stuart's soundtrack (which includes cuts by Daniel Lanois)
can be scored (owch!) from Amazon. Also, Bohlin,
the western outfitters, created a special edition belt buckle to commemorate the film,
and it was worn by the film's leads.

BBT On DVD
Well, we didn't get a "director's cut" of the full version of ALL THE PRETTY HORSES on
Columbia/TriStar home video, but the version that saw theatrical release is
available for rent or purchase, boasting audio-visual amenities (widescreen, Dolby Digital and 2-Channel Dolby Surround), the trailers,
filmographies, and production notes. No shots
of Billy Bob the Cat, though.
Will there ever be a director's cut of ALL THE
PRETTY HORSES? "Doubtful," says
Billy Bob, who doesn't want to do a director's
version without restoring Daniel Lanois' original
score, which he describes as the most beautiful film
score he has ever heard.
