Movie Quote
LIGHTNING: Ever heard that old saying? Put your
foot in your mouth?
Plot
This epic family drama involves three Los Angeles-based Chicano cousins whose lives take wildly different paths.
One (Benjamin Bratt) becomes a cop. One (Jesse Borrego,
Gael from the TV series 24) becomes a tortured, drug-addicted
painter. The third (Damian Chapa) is sent off to prison and becomes a
kingpin in the Mexican mafia.
What Billy Bob Gets To Do
Lightning strikes when Billy Bob plays the second-in-command leader of a pack of vicious Aryan Brotherhood-type
thugs (dubbed the "polar bears" for obvious reasons) doing hard time in San Quentin. Billy Bob gets to howl, sport a wicked pair of
lightning bolts tattooed on his throat (which were temporary,
alas, and cannot be seen in our tattoo section), feed Damian
Chapa a unique meal, and do a little work around the prison
woodshop.
Backstory
Directed by Taylor Hackford, the
film also stars Enrique Castillo,
Delroy Lindo, Richard
Masur, and Tom Towles (and be on the lookout for Lupe Ontiveros,
Danny Trejo, and Ving Rhames in smaller parts). Billy Bob actually did weight training with the prisoners
at San Quentin during this
shoot, giving him the deceptively heavy-looking frame he would
have through HOMEGROWN before dropping down to his slender,
post-ARMAGEDDON weight. Co-webmaster Little Sister Sage and I affectionately refer to this as the
orale! flick because everybody but Billy Bob seems to say that word a lot in this film.
