MARINE SERGEANT: Get out of the way! Gadiga!
Gadiga! Gadiga! C'mon, get out of here!
Plot
Tart-tongued, golden-throated entertainer Dixie Leonard makes a
lifetime career of entertaining America's troops, with a career
spanning from World War II to Vietnam. Along the way, she
battles it out with her performing partner Eddie Sparks (James
Caan) and loses two of the great loves of her life to war.
What Billy Bob Gets To Do
Yes, that's Korean he's barking. Billy Bob can be clearly heard as a racist
Marine Sergeant shouting orders to clear a bunch of freezing
Korean refugees out of the way as Bette Midler
and James Caan arrive in Korea to entertain troops during the
war. You can hear him, but you can only spot
him for a couple of seconds (we call this the
SOUTH OF RENO syndrome).
Backstory
This is Billy Bob's first appearance in an Oscar®-nominated flick. The film is still well worth the rent or purchase because Bette Midler deserved her Academy Award®
nomination, most especially for her first USO performance. Midler's character is based on an amazing
variety entertainer named
Martha Raye, who was indefatigable in her efforts to entertain
our troops and every bit as beloved by our soldiers as Bob
Hope. Excellent cast includes George Segal, Patrick
O'Neal, Arye Gross, Norman Fell, Melissa Manchester, former Jack
Benny writer and seminal TV director Bud Yorkin, and a personal
fave and pal of this webmaster's dad: ribald big band
leader Jack Sheldon. Andy Dick, Vince Vaughn, Arliss
Howard, and Xander Berkeley pop up, too, if you can spot them.
