Movie Quote
DAVE: Why don't you quit tryin' to be funny, because all
you're doin' is pissin' me off!
Plot
This odd little comedy set aboard a cruise ship
stars baby-faced Adam Sandler as Shecky Moskowitz, a waiter hoping to break into the bigtime
as a stand-up comic (maybe he's going overborscht). When the ship's headlining comedian
gets locked in the men's room, Shecky makes his bid for
stardom. A bevy of Miss Universe contestants, some scruffy and
apparently underfunded terrorists involved with General Manuel
Noriega, and ol' King Neptune himself
figures in on the mirth.
What Billy Bob Gets To Do
When he finally gets his crack at entertaining
the audience, Shecky is heckled by a deeply annoyed passenger
named DAVE (Billy Bob as you've never seen him before . . . in
shorts!!!), the world's grumpiest construction worker.
Backstory
The cast of this, Adam Sandler's first
feature, includes some interesting surprises, including Burt
Young, Billy Zane (who, fittingly, found his greatest fame as
the ultimate cruise ship villain in TITANIC), Milton Berle, Terry Moore (who was one
of the great, real-life loves of Howard Hughes), and Peter
Berg (who would go on to fame on CHICAGO HOPE and direct Billy Bob in FRIDAY
NIGHT LIGHTS). Oddly the Miss Universe contestants
include representatives from various states of the union
(including a Miss Arkansas) as opposed to one contestant
representing the U.S. According to the IMDb,
GOING OVERBOARD movie was shot in its entirely on a cruise ship
bound from New Orleans to Cancun (hey, Billy Bob--how was the
buffet?). The ship was going to that year's Miss Universe
Pageant and those real-life beauty queens happened to be on
board!
