Film Quote
VIC: He actually threatened to shoot Gladys if I did't tell him where the money was.
But I think he was counting on a level of commitment and affection between her
and me that just simply wasn't there.
Plot
Based on Scott Phillips' comic noir thriller (a critically
lauded first novel), the story concerns Charlie
Arglist (John Cusack), a not-too-sharp lawyer who
attempts to rip off the local mob on Christmas Eve, 1979. He
and his partner, Vic
Cavanaugh (Billy Bob), run a chain of strip clubs, and they have
cleaned out their operating accounts in the hopes of splitting
town before midnight. Their perfect crime is hindered by
bad weather, troublesome family members, troublemaking employees
at the strip joints, and the unhappy contents of a
footlocker. Connie Nielsen plays Renata, the stunning
manager of one of their clubs who may or may not be onto their
scheme. Matters grow considerably worse when their mob
masters discover that their bank accounts are empty.
What Billy Bob Gets To Do
Billy Bob plays Charlie Arglist's partner, a sleazy nightclub owner/pillar of the community named Vic Cavanaugh, who discovers that swimming lessons at a young age could have come in handy. Did you learn nothing about stolen bags of crooked cash and deep freezes from FARGO and A SIMPLE PLAN?
Backstory
Billy Bob hooked up again with John Cusack
(PUSHING TIN, FLOUNDERING) and worked for the first time with
Harold Ramis, whose admirable track record for comedies includes
GHOSTBUSTERS, GROUNDHOG DAY, CADDYSHACK, ANALYZE THIS,
MEATBALLS, STRIPES, and the fratboy classic ANIMAL HOUSE.
Connie Nielsen (GLADIATOR, ONE-HOUR PHOTO) replaced Monica Belluci, who was expecting a
baby. Oliver Platt and a pretty scary Randy Quaid rounded out the cast
