Movie Quote
MR. PRESIDENT: I'll give you anything you ask
for, as long as it's not something I don't want to give.
Plot
As
the Christmas holidays approach, the new Prime Minister of
England (Hugh Grant) longs for love from one of his assistants,
while his sister (Emma Thompson) copes with her husband's (Alan
Rickman) infidelity and her best friend (Liam Neeson) copes with
the death of his wife. Other pairs cross paths, switch
partners, and find love in unexpected places, while a washed-up
pop star (Bill Nighy) shills for his latest tune--a Christmas
ditty cannibalized from one of his earlier hits.
What Billy Bob Gets To Do
Looking like his face belongs on U.S. currency (our Billy
Bob--he is SO money), the unnamed President tries to
bully the British Prime Minister, then hits on the Prime
Minister's would-be love interest (Martine McCutcheon).
Backstory
Richard Curtis wrote the screenplays for a number of
contemporary British comedies, including FOUR WEDDINGS AND A
FUNERAL, BRIDGET JONES' DIARY, and NOTTING HILL. He extends his excellent track
record for LOVE, ACTUALLY, which follows a sizeable cast around
through the holidays as they reach out for love, often
succeeding, sometimes failing, evoking much laughter and some
tears. Particularly moving is Hugh Grant's opening
monologue about how the overriding message in all the phone
calls made from the four doomed planes on September 11th were
not about war or seeking vengeance, but about the need to
connect with loved ones and say the important things to them one last time. The cast is an
Anglophile's epic: Emma Thompson, Liam Neeson, Alan Rickman, Keira
Kightley, Colin Firth, Laura Linney, Elisha Cuthbert, a gaggle
of well-known supermodels, and Rowan Atkinson sifting potpourri
where it's least wanted.

What Christmas music collection
is complete without Bill Nighy's shlocky Christmas is All
Around? The film's soundtrack
has it, and more (and there is also an import version of the soundtrack with a few more
cuts).
Richard Curtis' screenplay is also available as a trade
paperback from St. Martin's Griffin, complete with a very
useful, full-color diagram showing precisely who loves whom.
