Billy Bob's Filmography

OUT THERE (1995)

Distributor
Showtime

Director
Sam Irvin

Character
Jailbird

Movie Quote
JAILBIRD:  You see, everywhere you go, they got this easy listening shit.  I used to work at a slaughterhouse, and you know what they had playing in there?  The exact same shit:  1001 Violins play the Hits of the Grateful Dead.  Shit like that.  Shit that makes Perry Como sound like Iggy Pop.  Of course, it wasn't for our benefit . . . it was for the pigs.

Plot
Bill Campbell is a news photographer who stumbles onto a roll of undeveloped film that  proves the existence of UFOs.  His alien probe results in misadventures involving trailer trash, accordions, and ugly cars.

What Billy Bob Gets To Do
Billy Bob's paranoid Jailbird speaks for us all on the insidious nature of easy-listening music.

Backstory
Would Showtime have made this had THE X FILES not been at the height of its popularity?  Well, the truth is . . . likely not.  The cast of this telefilm is a nuts and chews assortment: Bill Campbell, Rod Steiger, Julie Brown, David Rasche, Carel Struyken (the giant from TWIN PEAKS), Wendy Schaal, June Lockhart, Jill St. John, and Bobcat Goldthwaite.

One day, as I was approaching the entry gate at Disney Studios, I noticed that someone had gussied up the studio gate to look like the front entrance of a tiki-themed trailer park.  That being par for the course on a movie studio, I thought little of it until a couple of years later, when I rented OUT THERE and saw the tiki gate as the establishing shot to Julie Brown's psychic character's residence.
