Plot
Set in feudal-era Japan, this eco-fable follows the exploits of a valiant prince named Ashitaka, who receives a curse during battle with a dying demon god.  As he ventures beyond his village into the remote forests of northern Japan--riding a beautiful elk!--to find a way to revoke the curse, he stumbles onto an industrial village where society's misfits have found a safe community and meaningful life running an ironworks.  Unfortunately, the ironworks are polluting the lush, surrounding forest, which is populated by powerful gods and spirits.  To defend the forest, a young girl appears from the forest at night, riding bareback atop a magnificent white wolf god.  The girl, Mononoke, attacks the ironworks.  Her encounters with Ashitaka set into motion a final, apocalyptic confrontation between the supernatural forces of nature and man as Ashitaka desperately tries to forge a peace between the two worlds.

What Billy Bob Gets To Do
Billy Bob voices the part of Jiko Bo, a wily little toad of a monk sporting wooden stilt-heeled sandals.  Working at the behest of the Emperor, Jiko Bo has designs on the trophy rack of a deer god who may hold the key to the survival of the enchanted forest. He tags after Ashitaki, sensing that the prince will lead him closer to the deer god.

Backstory
If animation has a roll call of the immortals, alongside Walt Disney and Chuck Jones belongs Japan's Hiyao Miyazaki, who is internationally acknowledged as the world's greatest living animator. PRINCESS MONONOKE is both Miyakazi's masterwork and the highest-grossing Japanese film of all time. The English-language cast includes Gillian Anderson, Minnie Driver, Billy Crudup, Claire Danes, and Jada Pinkett-Smith.

The lovely, hardbound PRINCESS MONONOKE: The Art and Making of Japan's Most Popular Film of All Time, includes ravishing sketches, backgrounds, character studies, and final artwork, along with some poetry!  Available from Hyperion Press, this tome apparently lack an author.  We did check the copyright page, and there ain't no author! The ethereal music from Joe Hisaishi's score is also available on several CD editions.

BBT On DVD
At last! It's available through Miramax with both the highly entertaining English track (translated by Sandman master Neil Gaiman--oh, I swoon!) AND the much-desired original Japanese-language track. Trailer and featurette round out the package splendidly.  Nice touch: the prismatic swords on the cover art glow.
