Backstory
Fox was still in its infancy in 1990, trying out all sorts of youth-market prime-time shows, including 21 JUMP STREET and BEVERLY HILLS 90210.  S.E. Hinton's classic coming-of-age novel The Outsiders (written when she was only 15!) seemed like a natural, particularly after Francis Ford Coppola's successful 1983 film version, but the series was fated for a mere 14-episode run.  Up and comers from the cast included David Arquette, Michael Madsen, and Heather McComb.  The pilot episode set a Fox ratings record.  Critical acclaim for the series was strong, but did not persuade the network to nourish the show for another season.
